HUMSHAKALS MOVIE REVIEW
This week released the much awaited #Humshakals starring Saif Ali Khan, Ritesh Deshmukh and Ram Kapoor. It comes from Sajid Khan, the director of multiple comedy films over the years which have never been path breaking but yes funny and entertaining. The opening lines of the movie convey that it’s a tribute to Kishore Kumar and Jim Carrey style of comedy. Now let’s focus on the plot- Saif (Ashok) is a son of a multimillionaire and Ritesh (Kumar) is his childhood best friend, Ram plays the role of an evil maternal uncle (Refer to Kans in Mahabharata) who ploys to get the entire empire under his belt by proving Ashok mentally unfit. In a bid to do so he takes the help of his scientist friend who has developed a gene-changing solution , which changes human genes to a dog’s gene if consumed! Ashok’s treacherous uncle makes him drink it and the chaotic scenes start beginning and continues as a list of mindless buffooneries till the end of the movie with the introduction of Humshakals at rapid intervals (it can only known by the background music which plays “Humshakals…’ every time a new humshakal is introduced!) The climax is a pandemonium in itself, it’s filled with nothing but a 30 minutes of added boredom to a package of 2 hour 30 mins (Duration of the tragedy! Oh sorry, comedy!)
With Humshakals, Sajid Khan manages to fetch a new low in his carrier (Himmatwala? It was a Disprin Better!) Saif is in a never seen before avatar and it’s the script that takes him down with it. Ritesh is very impressive and Ram Kapoor is monotonic in most parts! The actresses of the film (Tamanna, Bipasha & Esha) are wasted completely. They have been kept at an underrated level in the movie. The film does occasionally bring on dollops of laughter but at the very next scenes calls for a disprin! Hence, the reference to Jim carrey and Kishore Kumar is the “one liner of the year”. At many stages the film tries to be a part of the comedy of errors genre but fails miserably and turns out to be comedy with errors! The background score is absolutely average and leaves the audience scrounging for something to take back home!
Overall, it is one of the weakest movies of the year which murders all expectations and falls flat on its face. Bumpy, jerky, crazy and distasteful…..this film leaves me wanting for more “-ve” adjectives.
